BREAKING NEWS: The Prime Minister: Russia Will Be Angry with Us, But We Have the Right to Protect the Truth

INTERNATIONAL: Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia reaffirmed his decision to vote in favor of the UN General Assembly resolution which demanded that Russia "immediately and unconditionally withdraw its troops from Ukraine within the recognized border." This decision is to protect the truth and be a responsible member of the United Nations.

According for the official Facebook page of Cambodia Government Spokesperson Unit, Prime Minister Hun Sen sent a message to the leaders of the Standing Committee of the Party, the Standing Committee of the Government, as well as members of the Royal Government on the night of March 2, 2022, that the situation in Ukraine is worsening and civilian deaths are increasing while the UN General Assembly is processing. The Prime Minister believes that Cambodia should act in this situation, both on the behalf of ASEAN and Cambodia itself.

"Within the framework of ASEAN, we are in discussions with other ASEAN members to issue a statement calling for a ceasefire, because without a ceasefire, human life and property will continue to die and be destroyed," he said. "We must decide to call for a ceasefire or negotiations cannot move forward; this is one of the desirable solutions on behalf of ASEAN."

He added that the decision to vote in favor of the UN resolution on the Ukraine crisis is necessary for Cambodia to co-sponsor with other countries to participate in the UN General Assembly.

He hopes that Russia will understand because what Russia has done in the recent past is against our Cambodian policy on foreign affairs, such as condemning separatism and condemning the use of force on others.

"So, of course, Russia will be angry with us, but as a sovereign state, we have the right to act to defend the truth, and we also have a responsibility as a member of the United Nations," he said.

On the night of March 2, 2022, Cambodia joined 140 other countries in voting in favor of the UN General Assembly resolution, demanding that Russia "immediately and unconditionally withdraw its troops from Ukraine within the recognized borders."

In a statement issued on March 3, 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said that during the voting process, Cambodia expressed concern over the escalating situation and the worsening humanitarian conditions caused by the ongoing military hostilities in Ukraine.

Cambodia believes in dialogue and diplomacy to prevent the situation from falling out of control and to seek a peaceful solution in accordance with the international law and the principles of the UN Charter.

Cambodia states that its position is that "all Member States must respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of other Member States."

Following Cambodia's decision on the settlement, the French Embassy in Cambodia commended Cambodia's decision to join 140 other UN member states in upholding their respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of other states, which is the basis of international order.
